Meet the Founders

  • Scott Temple

    CO-FOUNDER

Scott Temple embarked on his running journey in 2020, seeking a healthier lifestyle and a new personal challenge. His initial foray into the sport involved joining several local running groups, including WeRun313, Black Men Run, Atwater Runners, Downtown Detroit Runners and Walkers, and later, Dub City Runners. Through these connections, he found both community and inspiration, which significantly bolstered his confidence and passion for running.

As the year progressed, Scott recognized the health, wellness, and social benefits of being part of the running community. He began volunteering at races to give back to the community that had given him so much. When Johnny approached him with the vision of co-founding a running and walking club focused on giving back and fostering fellowship, they immediately began working together to make the vision a reality.

They chose Detroit’s Historic Avenue of Fashion District for its pedestrian-friendly sidewalks and scenic neighborhoods. Most importantly, they saw an opportunity to raise awareness of the benefits of movement within the community in which he was raised.

  • Johnny Monroe

    CO-FOUNDER

In 2021, Johnny Monroe envisioned creating a running and walking club to share the numerous health benefits of running and foster a supportive community. This vision came to fruition with the establishment of Avenue Runners and Walkers in March 2024. The club has seen remarkable growth, attracting members who share a commitment to both physical health and community well-being.

His dedication has led him to participate in a wide range of races, from 5k and 10k to 10 miles, half marathons, and full marathons. Looking ahead, he is set to tackle his first ultra marathon in 2024, reflecting his continuous growth and commitment to the sport.

Beyond his personal achievements, Johnny is deeply involved in giving back. He volunteers his time at various races and charitable organizations, including RF Events, Detroit Free Press Marathon, Trivium Racing Series, Epic Races, Welcome Home Yoga, Front Porch, Evangel COGIC, local men’s shelters, and the Autism Society of Greater Detroit.

Through his journey, Johnny exemplifies the transformative power of running and the importance of community, inspiring others to pursue their own health and wellness goals.
